Inverkan av den genetiska defekten Complex Vertebral Malformation på fruktsamheten hos SLB :
Complex Vertebral Malformation (CVM) is an autosomal recessive inherited defect in the Holstein breed. The defect has lead to structurally malformed calves and losses of pregnancies. To determine the effect of CVM on fertility in the Swedish Holstein Breed 375 Holstein bulls used in breeding by Svensk Avel and Skånesemin were assigned to this study. 228 bulls matched the criteria of birth year, 1995-1999, > 75 inseminations and a known CVM-status. Of the total 228 bulls 53 of them were CVM-carriers and 175 were non-carriers.
The SAS-programme was used to determine the effects of CVM-status, the bull?s father and birth year on Non-return rates (NRR) for 28, 56 and 168 days.
Breed differences in natriuretic peptides in healthy dogs
Measurement of plasma concentrations of natriuretic peptides have been suggested to be of diagnostic and prognostic value in canine cardiac disease. In several previous canine studies, however, a considerable overlap between investigated groups has been identified. A reliable natriuretic peptide test for use in clinical practice requires establishment of reference values for natriuretic peptides in healthy dogs and cut-off values for subclinical disease as well as for clinical signs of congestive heart failure. Numerous physiological, pathological and pharmacological factors, aside heart function, may influence concentration of natriuretic peptides. A potential effect of dog breed on natriuretic peptide concentration has been suggested but has, to our knowledge, not previously been specifically studied.

Many dogs in Sweden are put up for adoption at the Swedish buy- and sales site?Blocket?. This because in Sweden, rescue shelters mostly takes in dogs that have been confiscated by the police. The aim of this study was to investigate what kind of dogs that are put up for adoption and why owners put their dog up for adoption and also compare the results with those from other countries. 800 dog advertisements from ?Blocket? were collected in the study between January 31st and April 10th 2012.
Genetic variation in local Swedish sheep breeds
Sheep have played a very important part in rural history. In Sweden there were many kinds of
small native breeds, kept for their meat and fleece. Women cared for the flock that often had
very little to feed on during the cold and sometimes harsh winter months. This meant that
these sheep over time acquired special phenotypic properties depending on the environment
they lived in, and easily fed compared to modern breeds kept for meat. Most of these sheep
have since become extinct.
Levande vikt vid olika åldrar och sambandet med bröstomfång och mankhöjd hos SRB och SLB :
Live-weight at different ages for Swedish Holsteins (SLB) and for the Swedish Red and White Breed (SRB), and the correlation to heart girth and height at withers.
The aim of this investigation was to study the live-weight changes and mature weight for the Swedish Red and White Breed (SRB) and for Swedish Holsteins (SLB), and to estimate the correlations between body weight and body measurements such as heart girth and height at withers, respectively. The material used was from one of the experimental dairy herds (Jälla) of the Swedish University of Agricultural Science. It included recordings on 293 dairy cows with information from 7142 weight occasions and recordings on 275 dairy cows with information of 557 heart girth measurements and 560 measurements of height at withers. The registrations were done during 1993-2002.
There was a large variation in live weight between cows in different ages and lactation stages.
Jämförande studie av normal ERG-svar hos tre olika hundraser :
The purpose of this study was to compare normal electroretinographies (ERGs) from three different canine breeds in order to evaluate if there were any marked similarities or differences between these breeds as to ERG responses. It is known that healthy dogs from different breeds but also dogs within the same breed but in different age categories may have different appearances of their ERG responses. This may be a problem when evaluating if an ERG is normal or not from a dog within a breed not previously examined. Because of this it is important to obtain normal values for each breed and age group in order to be able to use these for later comparisons of ERGs obtained from individuals affected with various retinal diseases.
In this study we have chosen to examine dogs within the three breeds: Labrador Retriever (LR), English Springer Spaniel (ESS) and Chinese Crested Dog (CCD). All of these breeds may be affected with hereditary retinal diseases such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA).
It is possible that ERG-responses vary due to a number of different factors.

The parasite Neospora caninum is an intracellular protozoa discovered in the late 1980s. N. caninum has an indirect lifecycle which means it needs a definitive host and an intermediate host. The confirmed definitive host for N. caninum is dog and the intermediate hosts are among others dog and cattle.

Skiljer sig hundvalpars lekbeteende åt mellan raser och kön? :
There are many theories why animals play but none have jet been proven. During observation on Canids, play seems to be important when they learn to control the intensity of the bite and to facilitate the social structure within a group. When dogs play they perform behaviours that otherwise are used during hunting, reproduction and aggression that in another context would be for example hostile. The dog is one of the species that we humans have domesticated and they have been exposed to an intense and concentrated breeding so they can function in different areas, for example herding and hunting. This breeding has resulted in that the pure bred dogs can be very different between the breeds.
Customer Relationship Management : Hur ser behovet av CRM ut för små och medelstora tillverkande företag i Sverige?
An increasingly globalized market is leading to hard competition among manufacturing companies, which means that they are forced to become more customer focused to survive in the market. A Customer Relationship Management system is a system that will be of assistance to help companies succeed in building long term relationships with their customers. Best of Breed and ERP-based are two types of CRM systems. The study has focused on analyzing and examine the need for CRM systems at manufacturing companies. Our question formulation has been:? What need do businesses want to satisfy with a Best of Breed-based and ERP-based CRM system?? Are there any differences in the use of Best of Breed-based and ERP-based CRM system? In this study, we have chosen to carry out interviews and quantitative surveys with manufacturing companies to get their view of CRM-systems.
Undersökning av ögats brytningsförmåga i ett svenskt hästmaterial :
Skiascopy, also called retinoscopy, is a method for determining the refractive power of
the eye. There are only a few, old studies made on equine refraction. The aim of this
study was to investigate the refractive power in a population of Swedish horses.
The study consists of a review of relevant studies done on animals and an experimental
part where the refractive power of 93 horses of different age, breed and usage was
examined. A pilot study of 12 horses was performed regarding the importance of
cycloplegia when doing skiascopy on horses.
The results of the pilot study show no significant difference in the skiascopy results
between the group before and after cycloplegia were induced. Consequently, there is no
need of inducing cycloplegia before doing skiascopy in adult horses.
The study shows that horses usually were emmetropic (normally sighted) with minor
deviations toward myopia or hyperopia.
Genetisk variation av betydelse för mjölkkvalitet i Rödkullerasen :
The Swedish Red Polled breed is threatened by extinction and there are only around 1100 animals left. The breed was popular in the early twentieth century, but since then the numbers have steadily decreased. The overall objective of this study was to find out whether there may be economic incentives for preserving the breed. The milk quality properties are of major importance in the production of dairy products. Therefore we would like to establish if the Swedish Red Polled breed carries favourable alleles at loci of relevance for milk quality, to potentially make the breed more interesting for milk production.
Islandshästar med hosta och/eller prestationsnedsättning : skiljer de sig åt jämfört med andra raser?
The purpose of the study was to investigate whether or not Icelandic horses are
less severely affected in clinical symptoms of cough or decreased performance
than other breeds of horses. A breed variation in chronic respiratory disease
severity was suspected based on clinical experience at the Institution for surgery &
medicine, large animal, SLU Uppsala. A retrospective journal study of 17
Icelandic horses and 17 Swedish Standardbred horses with chronic problems with
cough and/or decreased performance compared several measurements of disease
severity.
The clinical signs, physical examination and laboratory testing results compared
were respiratory rate, abdominal breathing, lung auscultation, endoscopy results,
broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL) results and the blood gases pO2 and pCO2. All
parameters were available for all 34 individuals except for the blood gases, which
were analysed, in only four Icelandic horses and four Swedish Standardbred
horses.
The only parameters that appeared different between the two groups were
respiratory rate and pO2. The four Icelandic horses, which had blood gases
analysed, had more severe hypoxemia.
Estimation of heterosis and performance of crossbred Swedish dairy cows
The heterosis effect and breed group effect of crossbreds between Swedish Holstein (SH) and Swedish Red (SRB) was estimated in this study. Observations on cows born between 1990 and 2012 were used to estimate the heterosis effect and breed group effect for several traits included in the Nordic breeding goals: production, fertility, udder health, calving performance, survival and other diseases.
Breeding within the Holstein dairy breed has earlier been focused on increased milk production and conformation. This, combined with an intensive use of individual animals, has resulted in a radical increase of milk yield in the Holstein dairy cow population all over the world. However, this breeding strategy has resulted in increased inbreeding and several functional traits have impaired.
Extrem hundavel : ett välfärdsproblem för dagens rashundar
For centuries inbreeding has been used to refine traits in dogs, making desired traits more hereditary and thereby, different breeds have been invented. Breed standards have been written for each of these breeds, describing in detail the different characteristics of each breed. When humans start to choose which animal to breed from, so called artificial selection, taste is put before function and the laws of nature, the natural selection, cease to apply. During this development, pedigree dogs have gone towards more and more extreme exterior characteristics and the dogs may have inherited various, more or less, severe problems for example compromised vision, impaired ability to move and difficulties to breathe. However they can still survive and reproduce because humans provide them with the conditions to do so.
